The UPDF Commander of the Special Forces, Brig. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, last week joined his contemporaries from around the globe at an International Special Operations Forces (ISOF) conference in Florida, US where they discussed pertinent security issues facing the world today.

The conference was organised by the US Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) that brings together special operations forces from all over the world every two years.

The special operations commanders discussed global trends in countering violent extremist organisations like al-Qaeda, al-Shabaab and the LRA. They also explored how to strengthen the relationship between their respective special operations forces.

Admiral William H. McRaven, the Commander of USSOCOM, stressed the importance of building the global network and working together to achieve common goals.

“The problems of extremism, terrorism, international crime that are not unique to any one nation will require all nations to come together to address these issues,” he said.

Admiral McRaven, who has served for decades in the US Special Forces, is also the man who was principally responsible for planning and executing Operation ‘Neptune Spear’, the Navy Seal assault in Pakistan that led to the death of Osama Bin Laden.

The highlight of the conference was a Special Operations exercise with representatives from 16 nations training in tactics in land, sea and air scenarios. Special operations forces representatives from 84 countries attended the meet.
