Halima Namakula wins humanitarian award

After a while off the Ugandan showbiz scene, veteran songbird Halima Namakula returned to a heroine’s ovation.

She has been in the United States of America where she had the honour to be recognised with the TIAW World of Difference 100 Award under the best humanitarian category.

This award is given to recognize women and men who have advanced the economic empowerment of women whether on a small scale or otherwise in the developing world as well as those effecting change in the boardrooms of the business capitals of the world.

On Friday, a welcome party was organised for her at the Kamwokya based Women at Work- International offices where star singer Rema Namakula presented her with a bouquet of flowers on arrival. Various guests were also present at the function including the TAIW awards nominations committee member, Hajjat Rehema Kasule.

A visibly over-joyed Halima thanked everyone that organised the function in her honour and promised to keep working hard to see that every woman in the world especially her home country lives a better life.

“I am grateful for winning this international award and am honoured to take on this bigger challenge of helping women world-wide,” Halima mentioned in her speech.

Artistes Rema, Qute Kaye and other traditional performers entertained the guests on the merry-making evening.

Also recognised at the awarding ceremony held in Washington DC were four other Ugandan women; Benedicta Nanyonga, Fatuma Wamala, Hajat Aphwa Sebyala and Teopista Ntale Sekitto.
