THE organisers of the Zuku University Basketball League (ZUBL) want a grand finish to the maiden season.

Over the weekend, they got ideas of how to achieve that after holding the ZUBL conference playoffs at Lugogo. While the winners were UCU and Ndejje, who were crowned maiden ZUBL conference champions, ZUKU and its chain of organisers also had positives to draw on.

The conference playoffs generated a modest buzz that suggested the finale can be grand if properly publicised. There is clearly an appetite for a well-run University league and the ZUBL have to simply feed that need.

The ten teams that have participated in the maiden ZUBL certainly testify to that. Of the 10, UCU and Ndejje were favourites from the get-go and it was surprising they walked away conference champions over the weekend.

UCU beat UMU 70-40 to win the men’s Conference A finals while the UCU ladies defeated their Makerere counterparts in the women’s Conference B finals.

Ndejje won the women’s Conference B after a 50-33 victory over Cavendish while the Ndejje men survived Cavendish to win the Conference B finals 53-47.

If the championship playoffs are likely to be bigger than the conference playoffs, one thing likely to stay the same is the identity of teams likely to contend for honours.

Ndejje and UCU are likely to meet in the men’s final while UCU and Makerere are on course for a showdown in the women’s final.
