Proscovia's transfer game-changer

 

But in the case of Peace Proscovia, the peerless centre and best player in women’s NBL, UCU have lost on two fronts. Not only has Proscovia walked, after helping the Lady Canons to a historical season that ended in championship glory, but she had walked to UCU’s main and frankly only NBL rival at the moment.

 

The KCCA Leopards, who won the 2012 championship, were the only team capable of challenging UCU ahead of the new season that starts on Friday before Proscovia’s move. Now, KCCA maybe favourites for the 2014 title. 

 

The second implication of Proscovia’s game-changing transfer is that KCCA’s starting five will include four of the national team’s potential first-five, gearing up for the FIBA Africa Zone V championship. 

 

That is without mentioning KCCA coach Timothy Odeke, who is also boss of the national ladies side. Three, it means the ladies National Basketball League (NBL) will be a two-horse race for another year running, a fact that irks neutrals seeking to watch a competitive women’s division. 

 

Proscovia left a master’s degree course unfinished to complete her move to KCCA, telling the New Vision, “I have family and individual issues that I had to first sort out which can’t allow me continue with my studies smoothly but I will be back late this year”.

 

It will be interesting to see whether she will be back as a player/student or only as a student.
