A record 220 golfers are expected to compete at the president’s shield tournament due on Friday.

The tournament will be held to usher out Amos Nzeyi’s two year term as the president of the Uganda Golf Union.

Serena Hotel General Manager Anthony Chege on Monday presented a sh110m sponsorship cheque to Nzeyi towards the one-day tournament at Kitante.

The tournament starts on Wednesday with a professionals’ tournament at Palm Valley Golf Club.

They will play two rounds, one at Palm Valley on Wednesday and the second round at Kitante on Thursday for a sh10m prize.

Addressing a press conference during the launch of the tournament outgoing UGU president Amos Nzeyi thanked Serena for ushering him in and out of his two year tenure.

“You brought me in and now you are sending me out; I like that, that means you are a true friend”, Nzeyi commented on Serena’s sponsorship of the two tournaments that they have sponsored during his reign.

Nzeyi said in the two years his executive had done very well with the game and that it is now growing at a high rate with more golfers including the youth playing it.

“We have built a national team that has competed very well regionally and internationally and the standard of the game has improved tremendously and is now at a different level,” Nzeyi stated.

Nzeyi who will play alongside Serena Hotel Group Managing Director Jan Mohammed on Friday advised golfers to register for the tournament quickly as only the first 220 golfers will be accommodated in the Stable ford full handicap tournament.

Tee off is at 6.50am with the last group expected to start at 2.00pm.

The press conference was attended by incoming president Kiryowa Kiwanuka and outgoing executive members Johnson Omollo and Edwin Tumusiime.
