The Ministry of water and Environment is undertaking several programmes in the development and utilization of water resources for productive use in crop irrigation, livestock, aquaculture, rural industries and other commercial uses to improve people’s livelihoods in rural areas through increasing the storage volumes for water for production

The Urban Water and Sewerage Department is mandated to provide sustainable water and sanitation services to the population and economic activities in the urban areas of Uganda.Currently access to safe and clean water in urban areas is at 70%. The department has been able to attain this by decentralizing into Projects, regional Water and Sanitation Development Facilities and Umbrella Organisations to carry out operation and maintenance.

A brief of ongoing activities as of 12th February 2014Urban Water Supply and Sewerage Department (Ministry of Water and Environment) is developing piped water supply systems and sanitation facilities in small towns (STs) and Rural Growth Centres (RGCs) across the whole country.

The funding for these town projects is by the Government of Uganda (GoU) with support from the Germany Development Bank (KfW), the African Development Bank (AfDB), the European Union (EU) and the Austrian Development Agency (ADA).

Water and Sanitation Development Facility – North (WSDF – N) is a Government of Uganda programme under the Ministry of Water and Environment (MWE) specifically established to support the development of piped water supply and adequate sanitation facilities in the sub regions of Lango, Acholi and West Nile with a focus on the small towns and rural growth centres
