Ugandan Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi has urged Ugandans to embrace the culture of hard work to improve their livelihoods and also contribute to the development of the country.

Mbabazi said God endowed Uganda with vast resources which “we should exploit to develop the county, fight poverty, and achieve a middle income status”.

He said Kanungu district alone, has vast mineral resources and that a proposal has been made to construct a railway line to the region for easy transportation of the mineral resources to the markets.

The PM made the remarks on Friday at the burial ceremony of the late Bernard Birahire in Nyakinoni sub-county in Kanungu district.

At the burial, he told mourners to shun laziness and gossip, and instead respect and learn each other’s developmental views and focus on hard work.

“God gave us everything including fertile soils, beautiful country, good weather and minerals but the problem is people’s failure to work,” said Mbabazi.

He was accompanied by his wife Jacqueline Mbabazi.

He went on to challenge the people of Kanungu, and the country at large, to emulate the example of the late Birahire who he said distinguished himself as a perfectionist and meticulous worker.

The Prime Minister also thanked the church for promoting unity and demystifying death which he said leaves a psychological scar in our lives.

In his message, Rev. Canon Kenneth Kanyankore encouraged the congregation to acknowledge God as “the good shepherd who is in charge of our lives in all circumstances”.

Birahire died aged 87 after a long battle with an eye tumor.
