THE University Football League kicked off at Makerere University Main Grounds with the hosts holding defending champions Kampala University to a goalless draw on Tuesday.

Although KU, who beat Makerere home and away last season still dominated the first half of the league opener before Makerere recovered in the second, they were left with 10 with five minutes to go when referee Fredrick Kawooya dismissed Derrick Abigaba for a second bookable offense.

“We have started very slow as you know beginning of the season will always be tough. But we will continue to bond in training and it will be better with time,” KU coach Titi Kamara said after the match.

For Makerere University sports tutor Brian Nsubuga, it was a positive result since they lost to Kampala University home and away last season.

The league continues Wednesday with Nkumba University hosting Kyambogo in Entebbe. Nkumba and Kyambogo hope to forget their past and focus on playing the match to the end.

The previous match between the two sides in Nkumba in 2012 failed to end due to crowd violence and Kyambogo was thrown out of the competition.

They return to play their first University Football League match since that incident.
