IN order to handle medical emergencies more efficiently, Mukono district has developed red and yellow cards that will be issued to patients seeking treatment at Government health units.

Some of the conditions and ailments categorised as emergency under this system include accident victims, snake bites, infectious diseases, convulsions, the aged and VIPs.

The triage cards, were on Thursday introduced by the district health officer, Dr. Elly Tumushabe, to district leaders at a service delivery review meeting at the district headquarters.

Commissioning the cards, the LC5 chairman, Francis Lukooya Mukoome, asked for accountability reports from health units to be submitted to his office on a regular basis and warned that incompetent health workers would be sacked.

Tumushabe also directed health workers to immediately stop attending to patients while not wearing uniform and asked health officers in-charge of health units to enforce the directive.

“Uniforms are intended to show smartness and identify you from the rest of the people. I am directing officers in-charge of health units to ensure that by Monday, there is total compliance because uniforms have been provided by the ministry”, Tumushabe said.

It was also resolved that health workers, in addition to the uniforms, also wear name tags as a means of enforcing discipline.
