East Africa’s veteran newspaper columnist Jerry Okungu died on Tuesday at the MP Shah Hospital in Nairobi following a prolonged battle with prostate cancer.
Okungu, a marketer by profession, has been writing a Friday column on regional affairs in the New Vision for almost 10 years.true
David Makali, a Kenyan journalist, who has been working with Okungu to compile his autobiography, described him as a mentor.
“I was with him on Monday at about midday and he was in great spirits, although a bit worn out as the sickness had taken a toll on him,” he said.
Makali was slated to conduct a live recording of him tomorrow, in an attempt to piece together the final details of the memoir.
He was in the final process of compiling his autobiography that was to be released in March, detailing his life, political history, career and family.
Okungu was diagnosed with prostate cancer at an advanced stage in 2011 and has been undergoing treatment.
He researched and compiled information about the disease and later began an awareness campaign dubbed Jerry Okungu Prostate Cancer Forum, which was later transformed into a fund.
The fallen journalist has been eulogised by friends as a "jolly good man' who made friends across the board.
