Uganda’s leading opposition party Forum Democratic Change (FDC) has rubbished reports attributed to the leader of opposition that he will form his own political party in 2021.

Nathan Nandala was quoted this week as saying that he regretted being a party member of FDC and that had he known the party had ‘cheats’,  he would not have participated in the November 2012 presidential party elections.

Nandala ran in the elections and lost, a development which divided the party into two, with each group accusing the other of stealing the elections.

Addressing his supporters in Sironko over the weekend, Nandala reportedly said because of the unfairness in the party, he is considering forming his own party so he can contest for the presidency in 2021.

However, hardly a day after the comments were made, the party has come out to support Nandala saying he is incapable of making such despicable words about the party.

“I think the leader of opposition was misquoted. As far I know, we solved that problem and everyone has moved on. I know Mafabi was satisfied with the resolutions,” FDC party spokesperson Wafula Ogutu said.

Efforts to reach Nandala for a comment were futile. However, his spokesperson Sarah Eperu alluded to a conflict that still exists between the Mafabi and FDC.

“In a democracy what the majority decides is what you go with. It is one thing for the party to come up with a position. For everybody to accept the position is another,” she said.

The development comes hot on the heels of reports in some sections of the media that the current party president is planning to make sweeping changes in party position, in which a number of FDC representatives in the 9th parliament, including Nandala, are expected to be recalled to pave way for new representation in the House.

The position of leader of opposition is held for a two-and-a-half year renewable term. Nandala’s term expired in December last year.
