Issues of regional peace and security will take centre-stage during a three-day conference in the Burundian capital which has opened today.

The meeting in Bujumbura will bring together over 150 peace activists, government officials, development partners and other stakeholders from the five Partner States that make up the East African Community (EAC).

Addressing a press conference in the capital Bujumbura, the Permanent Secretary in Burundi’s Ministry of EAC Affairs Jean Rigi said that a large number of participants had already confirmed they would attend the East African Peace and Security Conference which is expected to be officially opened by Burundi’s First Vice President Bernard Busokoza.

“This conference is the best opportunity to reflect not only on the threats and challenges the region faces, but also opportunities,” said Rigi.

He added that the Partner States had already agreed on a wide range of measures touching on peace and security, including mutual cooperation to ensure that no country shall become a hiding place for criminals or terrorists.

Emphasizing that peace was essential for development, Rigi said that a favourable environment enables economies to grow. With prosperity, on the other hand, chances for peace are also enhanced.

Regarding the solution to existing conflicts, Rigi insisted on dialogue by all concerned. “We insist on inclusiveness and broad participation.”

The conference was preceded by a four-day training workshop on conflict-sensitive reporting for 25 journalists and editors drawn from the EAC five Partner States. East African News Agency
