Angella Katatumba’s music has always been presumed to appeal to a limited class of Ugandans but the mammoth crowd that turned up to witness the premiere of her music video said otherwise

Angella Katatumba’s music has always been presumed to appeal to a limited class of Ugandans. However,  the mammoth crowd that turned up to witness the premiere of her music video for the social media runaway hit 'Super Natural Gal' in Katonga Hall at the Kampala Serena Hotel recently, spoke a different story.

In every of the word, Katatumba redefined music video premieres as we knew them in Uganda. These functions which were largely started and popularized by rappers like GNL Zamba and Navio, were not much more than a fans get-together.

This was a whole different ball game. First off was a team of high-level guests who included diplomats, legislators, tycoons, politicians, royalty, socialites and beauty queens with Patrick Edwards the Trinidad & Tobago envoy to Uganda being the chief guest.

But most significantly, this was the first video premiere where an artist actually performed to a full live band – the Magic Hornz band.

The emceeing was ably handled by Isaac Rucci and the flamboyant Ann Nambooze, presenter of Campus 101 show on urban TV, who, despite her young age, portrayed confidence and maturity marinated with humor.

Performances kicked off at 8:00pm with the Magic Hornz band toting up some bliss to the quiet atmosphere in the hall with a fusion of contemporary and antique performances. They excited the crowd but fell short of the expected climax.

In came comedian Patrick Idringi, who livened things up with live performances of a few reggae songs.

A few minutes to 10:00pm, Angela Katatumba hoped onto stage to re-claim the show Patrick Idringi had stolen by performing a few of her songs before announcing the screening of the video.

She exhibited such vocal maturity with her multi-octave voice the crowd groaned with excitement!

With not a lot of shooting venues, the “supernatural girl” video eloquently tells the story of a girl in an early marriage which turns sadistic when the man in question starts battering the girl.

The theme of domestic violence is vividly painted in the whole setting and that coupled with the mild lighting and apt venues is creativity at its best.

Apart from the smoke that almost blurs every scene, the story line is extremely plausible and the graphic execution splendid.

A nice one Angella.
