The Uganda People's Congress (UPC) spokesperson, Okello Lucima, has said the Lira Municipality MP Jimmy Akena is not the party president elect.

Lucima is belonging to the cabinet of outgoing party president Olara Otunnu that was thrown out of Uganda House by pro-Akena youth last month.

Addressing a press conference in Ntinda on Friday, Lucima said Akena forced himself on the presidential seat after he and his group forcefully entered the UPC headquarters and took hostage of the party electoral commissioners before forcing them to declare him 'president elect'.

"What happened in UPC on May 30 was a candidate nomination process not election.  But Akena using a text dictated by his wife Betty Amongin and his cousin Lucy Ajok declared him a president," Okello said.

He added that district conferences nominate a candidate for party presidency after which a candidate is presented to the party delegates conference for approval as party president.

He said they reported the matter to police but up to now they haven't heard from them or seen action being taken against Akena’s group.
