CABINET has approved 11 new municipalities which will lead to creation of more 11 new constituencies.

The Local Government minister Adolf Mwesigye told New Vision on Tuesday that government will table the motion for the new municipalities in parliament today (Wednesday) afternoon.

Last week parliament approved creation of 43 new counties leading to 43 new constituencies. This means, there will be a total of 54 new constituencies and this will increase the total number of MPs from 375 to 429 MPs.

The proposed municipalities are Kisoro, Kitgum, Koboko, Kumi, Nansana, Kamuli, Ibanda, Kira, Makindye Ssabagabo, Njeru and Mubende.

The current number of municipalities is 22 municipalities and there 174 town councils and 204 town boards.

Greater Luwero Development Form chairman Christopher Ssebatta said they are also pushing for creation of three municipalities which include Wobulenzi, Luwero and Bombo.

“If small towns like Kumi, Tororo, and Kisoro have been given municipality status, Wobulenzi, Bombo and Luweero deserve the same status because they are bigger towns which are growing at a sporadic rate,” Ssebatta said.

In the course of discussing the proposal, more MPs are expected to propose inclusion of big towns in their areas to be added on the list.
