Is an ultrasound scan safe?

Dear Doctor, I heard that a foetus’ internal body parts can be checked using a scan to detect problems such as underdeveloped heart chambers.
However, I am worried that exposing my unborn baby to radiation might result in blood cancer. Are ultrasound scans safe for a mother and her unborn baby?

Dear Anon,
Ultrasound scans in pregnancy have been in existence for over 30 years and no risks or sideeffects to the baby and mother have been documented.
However, health providers only request for an ultrasound scan if there is medical indication to do so.
The investigation should not be used as a routine test at every antenatal visit. An ultrasound scan detects foetal abnormalities during the fi rst and second trimester.
