Opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye who was on Thursday morning arrested from his home in Kasangati, Wakiso district has been taken to Naggalama Police Station.

Police have also taken former Prime Minister, Amama Mbabazi, who was arrested on his way to Mbale for consultative meeting to Kira Road Police Station in Kampala.

Police said they had put Mbabazi under preventive arrest.  His convoy was intercepted at Njeru town in Mukono district.

Police Spokesperson, Fred Enanga, clarified on phone that they had not arrested Mbabazi but Police put the former Premier under temporary preventive arrest.

He explained that the preventive arrest was meant to keep somebody out of temporary danger. “We use it to temporarily keep someone out of a situation or crisis that the police feel may degenerate out of control. Once the danger has been eliminated, the person is set free,” he said.

Besigye’s arrest followed a heated argument with Kasangati Police operations commander, Fred Ahimbisibwe, who told the three - time Presidential candidate that they had orders not to let him leave his home.

Ahimbisibwe gave Besigye two options: “You either go back to your house or I arrest you.”

Besigye insisted that he had to leave because he had an appointment at the US embassy and was later scheduled to address a rally at Kasangati.

“My home is not a prison. Why do you want me to go back to my house? If you feel like I am a criminal, arrest me and take me to court,” Besigye said.
