THE beleaguered Uganda Boxing Federation elections have finally received a green light.

The elective assembly has been cleared for August 31, Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) vice president (administration) Dennis Galabuzi confirmed yesterday.

The election that was put off on April 28, is expected to usher in a new leadership that boxing enthusiasts believe will end the wrangles that have riddled the sport in the last seven years.

The election was deferred to allow the returning officer to vet candidates as required by the new constitution.

Galabuzi, the man who in charge of the normalisation process, yesterday declared that all steps have been met as required by the world boxing body - AIBA.

“All is ready. We have only one item on the agenda of the day-elections,” Galabuzi stressed yesterday.

However, only five out of 15 candidates that stood for the eight elective posts fulfilled the requirements.

Key among the requirements was the need for all candidates to have an Ordinary Level Certificate or its equivalent.

“There are some who made very cardinal mistakes which need to be corrected. But some out rightly forged academic papers and were disqualified and I would not like to mention any names,” explained Galabuzi.
