Do we really have celebrities in uganda?

Jul 29, 2013

But today where we have characters like Bad black as celebrities, my God no. However, I would like to call myself a star, yes, which will mean the same thing for a long time to come I guess.

I do not know about the celebrity part, I don’t walk around in shades or something. What I know however is that to be a celebrity you need to have done something impacting.

Ugandans mostly look for people who represent them both in and out of the country, portraying a positive image that should make them proud to be Ugandans.

If you do that, they will notice and it is only then that you are accorded celebrity status especially for us in the sports industry.

It is either that or nothing, so I guess I am not caught up in this whole celebrity thing, I am just doing my best and the rest will follow.

I do not know if I am a celebrity, really, I do not! I mean, in this world where words evolve in a speed, no I would not know! When we were growing up, celebrity was a person who was celebrated, a person that impacted the world in a positive way.

But today where we have characters like Bad black as celebrities, my God no. However, I would like to call myself a star, yes, which will mean the same thing for a long time to come I guess.

So I hope it is clear, I am a star, not a celebrity, and for me the two are different. I try and leave as much positive impact in the world as possible.  But if celebrity still had its original meaning, then I guess I would be a celebrity!

I would prefer to say that I am known and not a celebrity because Uganda is really a small country. You see the thing about a country like ours is that everyone knows somebody and anyone can be a celebrity for the right or wrong reasons.

To be honest, I do not know what criteria Ugandans follow when granting people celebrity status because when you look at the celebrities we have, really, it is quite confusing.

As a matter of fact, the definition of celebrity is not even what it was at all. So again, it would be right for me to say that I am known and if that is what makes one a celebrity, then guess I am.

Yes, I am a celebrity. And a celebrity in my definition would be a person that attracts attention for whatever reason. You see Ugandans have different minds and what they look for is quite different so what one find disturbing they might find exciting and that person turns into a celebrity.

So if one plays their cards right in their different fields, they could be called a celebrity in this country. I think I am a celebrity because of my unique voice and features which attract people’s attention.

Well I am not sure. But I guess I am… hmmm, yes, I think I am a celebrity. And no, I don’t want to praise myself but I think I am a celebrity! About what Ugandans look for in a celebrity, quite honestly, it is confusing. I mean let us face it people are celebrities for all kinds of reasons that we might not understand.

When a person is really rich, people will notice and then they are immediately called celebrities, just like that. Then there is that lot of people that thrive on drama, eventually people notice and in no time they become celebrities.

There is the genuine lot though, the one that is talented, people admire and appreciate what they do and eventually think them celebrities. Really, a lot of things will make one a celebrity, I can’t isolate one thing and say, that one, no.

To be quite honest my inner man struggles with being referred to as a celebrity in this country. Some of us and our adoring fans have totally abused or rather raped this otherwise revered term severely.

By nature l am a visionary, which means that l understand that l am the designer of my destiny. In the pursuit of my dreams l love to identify with a bird called the EAGLE which we all know flies solo but highest. I have never been the bandwagon kind of girl; I was never concerned with the hottest gossip in town.

I love to think and dream wild & free, to envision the unseen and manifest it in the physical. Today I am invited to speak to motivate and inspire. So yes, Uganda has chosen to celebrate me.

Ugandans have qualified me as a celebrity yet l have had no scandals to offer, no personalized A' class vehicles to show off and certainly no dollars to throw about.
