Police in Rwizi region have arrested 25 suspects in an operation against crimes committed by thugs in areas of Bwizibwera in Mbarara and Igorora in Ibanda district.

Polly Namaye, the Rwizi region Police spokesperson, said the operation is meant to weed out suspected thugs who attack people with pangas, burglary and cattle theft in the area.

“We arrested suspects in possession of marijuana and stolen property,”she explained.

Namaye said they also recovered a police uniform from some of the suspects while others did not have identification documents.

Among the suspects include; David Arinaitwe, Bosco Rutarimbwa who were found with dried marijuana plants in their homes and Caleb Abaho who was found in possession a police khaki uniform.

The arrests were a continuation of the Police and army joint operation launched in Mbarara district at the beginning of July in an effort to curb the soaring crime rate in the region.

The first operation led to the arrest of 300 suspected criminals.

Namaye appealed the public to be vigilant and cooperate with security agencies to restore sanity and security to locals.

The operation will be extended in other crime spot areas in the districts of Kiruhura, Isingiro, Ibanda, Ntungamo and two divisions of Nyamitanga and Kamukuzi in Mbarara Municipality.
