KAMPALA - Christopher Thomas, an American citizen and estranged husband to Princess Ruth Komuntale of Toro Kingdom is admitted to Mulago Hospital after he was knocked down by a speeding vehicle on Entebbe Road.

A resident of Lubowa Housing Estates in Wakiso district, Thomas, 33, was hit at about 2:00am on Saturday morning as he crossed the road at a zebra crossing point located at Kibuye- Madaala along Entebbe Road.

Known to friends as Prince Duke, Thomas was Sunday still admitted in Room 7, Ward 6C of Mulago Hospital with a fracture on his right arm and multiple bruises on his forehead and back.

Police sources say that Thomas, who separated with his wife Princess Komuntale in 2013 less than a year after their lavish royal wedding in Fort Portal, was hit while returning from a friend’s bar where he had been drinking and watching soccer.

Policemen from the nearby Madaala Police Post rescued him and he was rushed to Mulago on a patrol vehicle, UP 0769.

On interrogation, Thomas was able to reveal his identity and the doctors transferred him to Ward 2B.

On Sunday morning he was transferred to the hospital’s private wing on Ward 6C, Room 7 on instructions from top hospital management.

Journalists were barred from accessing him. “He can now talk and is able to recognise people, he will be well,” a source that visited him said. Two women and two male friends were Sunday attending to him.

Thomas told detectives who were curious to know the identities of the people around him that one of the women was a girlfriend of his friend and the rest were workmates.

His cellphone and a few other personal belongings he had at the time of the accident were retained at Katwe Police Station.

‘Necessary security’

The officer in charge Mulago Police Station, ASP Hasim Kasinga confirmed that Thomas was being treated at Mulago, but said they were not allowing people to access his room for security reasons.

“The patient is now in the hands of Police and we don’t allow people inside his treatment room for security reasons,” Kasinga said.

Thomas gave Police phone contacts of his mother in the US and those of a few other close relatives who could be contacted for further details.

“We will give him the necessary security,” he said.

After going through a storm that saw the young couple have a bitter split, Thomas apologised to his wife, the King and the people of Toro kingdom for the mistakes he made that saw their marriage end within a period of less than one year.

He posted the apology on his Facebook page saying he acknowledged having made grave mistakes in their marriage but sought for forgiveness from his wife Komuntale.

Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesman, Patrick Onyango said police was following up the matter and would trace the car involved in the accident.

Photos of Thomas showing his bruised face, back and fractured arm where posted on his Facebook page.

Ben Mugerwa, the Kabowa LC I zone chairman in Rubaga Division told New Vision that Thomas who hails from the state of Missouri, in the US has been living in the area for over eight months.

Sources at Katwe Police Station revealed that Thomas had been involved in a string of cases with Police related to assault and driving under influence of alcohol.

Last month, he was held for five hours at Katwe Police Station and released on bond for allegedly beating up his new girlfriend, Gloria Kabila.

The couple ended their relationship with each accusing the other of infidelity.
