Arua district health officer, Dr. Patrick Anguzu has urged members of the public to stop open defecation to scale down the burden caused by communicable diseases.
Dr. Anguzu described open defecation as a major cause of many water-borne, food-borne and environmental diseases in the district.
He says open defecation has become common and a worrisome practice in the district.
Dr. Anguzu says soil-transmitted worm infections are transmitted by eggs present in human faeces, which in turn contaminate soil in areas with poor sanitation.
