Tororo district council has proposed a sh30.5b budget for the financial year 2013/2014. The district spent sh28b in the last financial year.

This will be the first time the district has not had to return unspent money to the treasury in five years.

The secretary for finance, Joseph Okware, while presenting the budget estimates to a council meeting last week, said the education sector was allocated sh14.9b (48%) to cater for teachers’ salaries and construction of more classroom blocks and pit latrines.

Okware said priority was also given to health which got sh4.5b, administration sh4.2b, production sh2.2b and technical services sh2.1b.

He said the Central Government will contribute sh29.5b to the district, while the donors will give sh377m and the local revenue sh655m.

The LC5 chairperson, Emmanuel Osuna, said the budget is well balanced to cater for the pressing needs of the community with much emphasis on fighting poverty and improvement of household income.
