IT was a moment of tears and sorrow on Thursday afternoon as Joan Kagezi’s body arrived at her late husband’s ancestral home in Bukasa, Wakiso District as thousands bid farewell to the slain prosecutor amidst tight security.

Kagezi was shot dead on Monday evening by unknown assailants as she drove home with her children.

President Yoweri Museveni called the Kagezi family to express his condolences and promised to support them in any way they deemed necessary.

“The president has not been able to attend the burial, but he has sent a message saying that he will pay school fees to all school going children until they finish,” a relative of the deceased said at the burial.

The mourners, amid painful recollection, described Kagezi as a woman of character.

“As residents of Bukasa we have lost a great person. A woman who was corrupt free yet she handled sensitive cases,” said James Kasato, the Wakiso councilor.

Kasato also requested the Government to provide Kagezi’s report as soon as possible.

“Government officials present, you failed to provide the masiro (tombs) report and the Buddo fire report but this time, we want to see Kagezi’s report. If an important person can be killed like that, what of us commoners?” he said.

The Bukasa Church priest, Rev. Bukule, who led the service, asked mourners to love one another and also requested the children to always read psalms 23 and 35 whenever they feel down.

Kagezi was buried next to her late husband.
