The 115 tonne Laropi ferry connecting Adjumani to Moyo district across River Nile has been assembled pending trials to ascertain its seaworthiness.

The sh6b modern ferry which was supplied by Damean, a Dutch firm has a seating capacity of 120 passengers.

It has passenger shelters and navigation safety equipment such as life jackets for all passengers.

Dan Alinange, the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) spokesperson, said they are currently training staff who will man the ferry.

Landing sites on both ends are being improved before it commences operations by end of next month.

He said the procurement of this vessel is a sign of the Government’s commitment to improved water transport.

“Ferries continue to bridge the gap in road transport which is constrained by heavy rains that have left many bridges washed way and others heavily damaged. The Government will procure more ferries of this kind,” Alinange said.
