The Kansanga - Ggaba road has been 'recognised' as having the highest number of drunken road users with one in every ten vehicles being driven by a drunk person.

This was revealed by the traffic commissioner, Dr. Steven Kasiima, who said the police are kept busy day and night on this particular road hunting for drunken drivers.

He said bars along this road operate day and night leading to a high number of drunken road users including bodaboda cyclists, bicycle riders, and shockingly, pedestrians. He attributed the unenviable statistic to the numerous bars that dot the area.

Right from the environs of the US embassy in Nsambya, Kabalagala, towards Muyenga, Kansanga, Bbunga all the way to Ggaba, and Munyonyo, for every three business premises, one is a bar!

Ggaba and Munyonyo also boast of beaches like Speke Resort, Ggaba beach, KK, and others. There are revelers who go for what have become notorious boat cruises and drive back to town drunk, revealed the police commissioner.

Speke Resort has a dock for these boats. Revelers sail all the way to Entebbe and Busabala from Munyonyo and then drive back drunk.

In this respect, Dr. Kasiima recognised the Kabalagala police station traffic boss, Apollo Sirvasco, with the Uganda Transport Safety (UTS) award for putting up a spirited fight against drunken driving.

Owing to its notoriety for drunken drivers, there are daily drunken driving operations along Kansanga-Kabalagala Road.
The awards were inaugurated to boost road safety and the best performers are rewarded for their vigilance.  Apollo said as the night wears on in Kabalagala so does the intensity of police operations to curb drunken driving.

Other road notorious for drunken drivers, according to police, are Entebbe Road, Port Bell Road towards Luzira, Kampala Road among others.

Kasiima also attributed spiralling cases of accidents to poor planning. He revealed that the road network in Kampala was designed to carry only 150,000 cars yet Uganda Revenue Authority registers 3000 new vehicles every month most of which are driven in the city!

He said all driving schools will be required to register with the Works and Transport ministry in a bid to ensure only qualified drivers use roads.
