KAMPALA - Bubulo West MP, Tony Kipoi Nsubuga was returned to Luzira Prison after his treason case was adjourned to next week.

The legislator appeared before Justice Mukasa Lameck on Tuesday at the High Court in Kampala.

But the judge adjourned the case because the lawyers of the accused had failed to bring with them files related to the case. The accused is represented by Michael Okecha and Caleb Alaka.

“I want to give you enough time in order to allow you organize your files for bail hearing on 19th this month [February],” the judge said.

The lawyers of the accused complained that the affidavit was issued very late, which did allow them prepare in time.

Caleb said that the accused is entitled to bail on grounds of health complications. He said the MP is suffering from high blood pressure.

“Since Kipoi is an MP and he is innocent until proven guilty, he is therefore entitled to bail,” he argued.

Prosecution alleges that the legislator has been recruiting personnel from Uganda as well as Congolese rebels belonging to COGAI, a rebel group based in Bunia in Ituri, Democratic Republic of Congo.

It is also claimed that Kipoi had promised to support the rebel groups with firearms. Kipoi is also said to have foreign sponsors, but they are yet to be named.

Police are also investigating Kipoi on allegations of trafficking narcotics.

His personal assistant was arrested in Busia on the Uganda-Kenya border with narcotics, to which he pleaded guilty and was fined sh1m. Kipoi paid the money.
