ENTEBBE - President Yoweri Museveni has said the relationship between Uganda and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea has existed for a long time and described the Koreans as friends who have helped Uganda for a long time.
He made the remarks at State House, Entebbe during a meeting with Kim Yong Nam, the president of the Presidium of the Supreme People’s Assembly of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea who is in Uganda on a four-day visit.
“Our North Korea friends helped us in a number of ways. The first tank force was trained by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea,” he said, adding: “There are no issues concerning relations between the two countries.”
Museveni thanked Kim for visiting Uganda and said that himself having been to North Korea a number of times, he was looking forward to the unification of the Korea peninsula.
According to a press release from State House, Museveni said Uganda had worked with the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea for a long time and that the country had been part of the anti-colonial movement.
He thanked the country for facilitating its pilots to train their Ugandan counterparts. He asked the Pyongyang delegation to convey his regards to the Korean Supreme leader Kim Jong Un.

On his part, Kim revealed that he was in Kampala to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries.
He said Kim Jong Un wishes Museveni success in his efforts to make Uganda prosperous.
Kim also expressed concern over the developments in the Arab Spring in North Africa and the Middle East, saying the situation in the regions deserves special attention.
Kim called on the non-aligned movement member countries to unite to overcome domination. He also proposed that the hosting of the Non-Aligned Movement should rotate among continents.
The meeting was attended by the state minister for regional affairs, Asuman Kiyingi.
Kim last visited Uganda in 2008, when he was on a tour of African countries, including Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Namibia.
