Uganda ready to work with Libya

President Yoweri Museveni has welcomed the positive developments towards the normalisation of the situation in Libya.

He reiterated the need for African countries to always give a chance to dialogue within the framework of the internal, regional and international mediation efforts where conflicts arise.

President Museveni made the remarks while meeting the new Libyan Prime Minister, Ali Zeidan, at the sidelines of the 20th African Union (AU) summit in Addis Ababa on Monday.

He, however, expressed concern over the intensifying insecurity in northern Africa and linked it to the unfortunate events in Libya during which the African peace and security mechanisms were not given a chance to work.

Zeidan, according to State House, briefed President Museveni on the steps being taken towards normalisation of the security and the political situation in Libya.

He assured Museveni that his government had ushered in a democratic era and pro-people development.

Zeidan reiterated his government’s call to Uganda and Africa at large to receive the new government in Libya in the AU fold and be ready to extend support and guidance to them.

He also said Libya was ready to work with Uganda for the mutual benefit of the two countries.

Zeidan hailed President Museveni for his outstanding peace-keeping efforts, especially towards defusing conflicts on the continent.

While in Addis Ababa, President Museveni also held talks with the European Union Commissioner for Development, Andreas Piebalgs. The two discussed regional security issues in Africa, including the situation in Mali and Somalia.

During the meeting, Museveni, who is currently the chairman of the East African Community, the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa and the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region, highlighted the situation in eastern Congo.

He informed the European Union delegation that most of the stakeholders, in their efforts to bring peace to eastern Congo, had no problem with the content of the agreement that was scheduled for signing on Monday .
