The Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Katumba Wamala, has cautioned the youth against impatience urging them to devote their energies to productive activities.

He said most youth spend time watching movies which have given them an illusion of a rather glamorous life which they want to achieve instantly.

“The youth want to start work today and after their first salary drive a vehicle which a person who has worked for twenty five years is driving. That is artificial. Life does not work like that. There is need for our youth to learn to work patiently and with dedication,” he advised.

All Ugandans, he added, should be committed to what they are supposed to do other than thinking of what they are to benefit before they even start work.

He gave the example of Professor Livingston Luboobi who has dedicated his life and knowledge in educating Ugandans regardless of what he was earning from the job.

“Ugandans should emulate Luboobi because the fact that he is Professor of Mathematics, he would have opted to go abroad where they pay more money for such vocations. But he decided to stay because he has love for his country,” he said.

If all Ugandans do this, Wamala added, “We would have less problems in the country and would also help the country to compete with the rest in terms of development”.

Wamala was presiding over the Vocational Award Ceremony of Prof. Livingstone S. Luboobi by the Rotary Club of Kampala-Ssese Island for dedicating his life and time to nurture many mathematicians on Thursday at Nommo Gallery Nakasero, Kampala.

Lubobi thanked rotary for honouring him and promised to continue serving the country until God calls him.
He said he loves mathematics and everyday he wants to do even better.

“This award has given me more strength to work even harder because now I know there are people out there who appreciate,” he said.

Rotary club president, Henry Musisi said they nominated Luboobi for the award because he has dedicated his service to the nation and has educated so many important people across the globe.

He said, as part of the rotary program, every month of October they reward persons who have contributed towards vocational development.

“I believe he deserves it, he was the vice chancellor of Makerere University but even after serving in that highest office, he went back to teaching. This is not common to many people,” Musisi explained.
