NRM to emphasize party discipline - Museveni

President Yoweri Museveni has said that the National Resistance Movement (NRM) is going to emphasize Party discipline in the forthcoming by-elections for the seat of the Woman MP in Butaleja District following the recent death of legislator Cerinah Nebanda.

The Electoral Commission has set February 2013 for the by-elections to fill the position that follows the death in Kampala of the late Cerinah Nebanda in Kampala over a fortnight ago.

The President was meeting Butaleja district leaders at his country home in Rwakitura, Kiruhuura district yesterday as the district prepares for the by-elections. He said that indiscipline by characters that were bent on marring the process of the by-elections would be punished using the National Constitution as well as that of the NRM.

Museveni was pleased to note that the groups that are vying for that Parliamentary Seat have resolved to settle their differences and support one NRM candidate who will emerge after the Party primaries.

The President expressed his condolences to the delegation of over 70 members following the death of their youthful MP. He revealed to the delegation that the suspects who had been arrested in connection with the demise of the late legislator were charged in courts of law on the 31st December 2012.

He called on the Butaleja LC5 Chairperson and the other leaders not to take sides in the forthcoming elections adding that “as a leader and parent I cannot take sides.”

Turning to development, the President said that the people, who are outside his home district of Kiruhuura, are his friends because they are the market for the milk that he produces.

He highlighted to them the 4 main pillars of the NRM as being non sectarianism, Pan Africanism, modernization and democracy.

The NRM Chairman of Busolwe, and also Busia Resident District Commissioner, Hajji Imran Muluga, reported that they have resolved to work together. He revealed that they are ready to have the by-elections without conflicts adding that “we are prepared to support one NRM candidate.”
