KWEEN - The NRM flagbearer in Kween district, Paul Kapchemeiko Machinjach early Friday enjoyed smooth victory with 11, 575 votes, beating his two rivals, an independent and an FDC contender.

Nelson Chelimo, an independent returned 8, 252 votes while FDC's Tom Chemusto trailed with974 votes.

The Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Nandala Mafabi, sneaked away as results trickled in, indicating his party’s fading hopes.

The Kween district chair fell vacant in August 2011 after the High Court in Kampala nullified the election of Lawrence Mangusho Cherop over lack of the requisite academic qualifications and failure to comply with the electoral laws.

Other candidates in the Kween by-election included Alex Labu and Jackson Mwanga.

“We are already in celebrations. Our candidate (NRM) has won with a very big margin. He has won in all, but two sub-counties and with a big margin,” Kween Woman MP Lydia Chekwel said.

Meanwhile, FDC's Salaamu Musumba beat seven contestants to the Kamuli LC5 seat.
