Tororo Girls School closed over strike

Tororo Girls School has been indefinitely closed and all students ordered to leave the school compound, following a students’ riot over an alleged demonic attack.

A cross-section of students, many of them members of Scripture Union, a Christian grouping, on Tuesday evening turned violent and splashed urine on the Police officers and teachers before pelting them with stones.

The angry students were protesting a decision to stop them from having fellowship and the confiscation of Bibles by the school administration.

They also protested against the expulsion of Majoreen Obara, a Senior Five student and Lucy Anyopa, a Senior One student, who were accused of being involved in banned prayers.

The students were forced to complete their exams by Tuesday, apart from those in Senior Six.

The headmistress, Ida Tarinyeba, said they closed the school because of continuous unrest by the students.

Tarinyeba said they still have Senior Six exams running till November 30, adding that the strike was affecting the candidate classes.

More than 1,000 students were still stranded outside the school gate with their luggage due to lack of transport to their homes.
