Rotary Cancer Run Sunday Former Republic of Tanzania President Ali Hassan Mwinyi will be in the country Friday, two days before the Rotary Cancer Run takes place, organisers have confirmed.

“Our Chief Runner Ali Hassan Mwinyi has confirmed that he will arrive in Uganda ahead of the long awaited Cancer Run. He is coming with his wife and 10 other people aboard a Kenya Airways flight,” said Enid Nambuya, the chairperson of the mobilisation committee for the Run.

The number of sports teams joining Sunday’s Cancer Run has continued growing. On Wednesday Uganda Cricket Association (UCA) registered both the men’s and women’s national cricket teams for the run.

The kit can be picked at Centenary Bank (Mapeera House), Rotary Uganda Offi ce (9th Floor NIC Building), Bridge Credit Finance (opposite Main Post Office), and all Capital Shoppers supermarket outlets.

The Pepsi and Centenary Bank-sponsored Rotary Cancer Run, now in its third year, is organized to raise funds towards the completion of the Rotary Centenary Cancer Ward at St. Raphael of St. Francis Hospital, Nsambya in Kampala.

The ward will help to supplement the current limited facilities in the country, in prevention and treatment of cancers.

The planned 36-bed capacity ward is estimated to cost Shs1.3 billion and is currently in its final stages.

Pepsi, Centenary Bank, ICEA, Turkish Airlines, National Housing and Construction Company, National Water and Sewerage Corporation, Mukwano Industries, SC Villa, and Bank of Uganda have all registered staff for the run. The run is expected to attract over 10,000 runners in the 21km, 10km and 5km categories.

The flag-off ceremony will be at the Kololo Ceremonial grounds.
