Speculation is ripe that the recent discovery of oil may thrust the sector to the helm of the country’s biggest contributor to the economy once full production gets underway. But for the moment, agriculture retains that slot; a position it has held onto for the best part of the past 50 years.

Cash crops have consistently been the major source of revenue on both an individual and country level. This can be attributed to the fact that more than 87% of the population lives in rural areas and heavily depends on agriculture.

Tea, cotton, coffee, sugarcanes, sunflowers are some of the major cash crops that are being grown on large scales. But one cannot exhaustively discuss the agriculture sector in Uganda without recognizing the impact of tobacco in the lives of the farmers, agricultural sector and economy at large. Read more
