The Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi has challenged the youth to exploit the existing ICT opportunities to create jobs and develop applications that benefit their communities socially, economically and politically.

This was during a dinner crowning the community innovations awards ceremony at Serena Hotel Kampala August 21, 2014.

“The economy is faced with so many challenges like availing jobs for the graduates,” pointed out Mbabazi.

“If we are to leapfrog like China and Asia have done, we have to shun the set of guide lines and exploit the new opportunities like developing ICT applications.”

The winners Joshua Sentamu, Derrick Lwanga and David Tusubira developed an application called K-Free.
They were given smart phones each, money to foot the bills of taking their application to the next level and treated to a sumptuous dinner at Serena Hotel.

State minister for Information and Communication Technology, Nyombi Thembo said the number of participants has been growing since the community innovations award started.

“We now have competitors from Nkumba University, Mukono Christian University, Mbale Islamic University, Kampala International University,” pointed out Thembo.

“The competition was very stiff. You are all winners because what you develop is very relevant to our society and the world at large.”
