The Ebola epidemic especially in West Africa has affected turn up for the U-15 Africa Badminton tournament that started at Lugogo on Monday.
Eight countries, which had hitherto confirmed participation, have shunned the event citing fears of contracting the deadly Ebola virus.
The countries argued that even if Uganda is free of Ebola, players could easily contract the disease while travelling through the different
countries and airports.
Only players from South Africa, Mauritius, and Uganda which has fielded two teams had registered players by press time while Zambia, Kenya and Egypt were due to arrive to participate in the one-week tournament.
The 5th Africa U-15 tournament had initially attracted 18 teams.
Africa Badminton Federation general secretary, Raja Gaya opened the event.
“We hope our boys and girls will perform well after drills from coaches Ronald Kaserenge and Annet Nakamya,” noted the CEO of Uganda Badminton Association Simon Mugabi.
