Amon Lukwago opens up about Keron, Juliana

Aug 16, 2014

I want like 20 kids. I have seen the dangers of having only one child. It is going to take me some time to heal.

Juliana is on holiday, why didn’t you go with her?

I had to stay around to complete the work on my son’s grave. I could not leave, I had to protect what he went with. I was told that people thought that we had buried him in a golden coffin and they wanted to steal it, so I placed guards at the grave.

How are you coping with the loss?

Life has to go on. I try as much as possible not to think about Keron. I would have travelled but my friend Lucas asked me to stay and help him organise Golola’s next fight. And indeed it has kept me strong, because I am always busy. But it is not easy especially when I am alone in my bedroom.

Why was Keron’s body taken to your father’s house, not yours?

So many people have asked me that question. Many thought that I did not have my own house. But the truth is my father insisted that Keron’s body be taken to his home because that is where he was baptised from and he was going to be his heir. We argued about it for a day when we were still in Nairobi and he won. But I wanted to take my son to my home in Busabala.

Do you have plans to get other kids?

Yes, actually, I want like 20 kids. I have seen the dangers of having only one child. It is going to take me some time to heal.

Do you still have feelings for Juliana?

Why don’t you leave us alone? That is between me and her and I am busy, I don’t have time to think about us. What you should know is, we talk.

Why don’t you just get back together?

Who said we were separated? At the moment we are still mourning our son. There is time for everything.

When will you get married?

I do not believe in marriage. It is a long contract. I believe in love. A ring does not mean anything. I have friends who have married today, then after a few months, they divorce.

I am still waiting for a sign from God that marriage works.

Talking about God, do you go to church?

What is the church? The church is in me, so I am always in church. The last time I stepped in church, it was for my son’s funeral service. But before that, I had taken long. I do not even pray, but I thank God. I have spent most of my life in Europe and I have seen the people who brought religion here don’t pray on Sunday. They go to the car wash and Sunday market. I have my own faith in God.

What do you think of sex before marriage?

It is the best thing I have ever known in life. Are there girls who get married when they are virgins? You cannot buy a car before a test drive. I have never seen any virgin. Could you be?

Which female Ugandan artiste do you admire?

Wait! What’s her name? Angela Kalule. She sings reality.

What does that necklace mean to you?

When I turned 21, my family gave me a necklace, so when I turned 25, I removed the 21 and I replaced it with A. I love this necklace.
