The Police have urged university authorities to step up security in their campuses as the country heads to the jubilee celebrations next month.

Police said terrorists have targeted public places more especially universities, which keep many students including those coming from the neighbouring countries.

"Terrorists do not discriminate, it is has come to our notice that they are now targeting universities due to the fact that they keep many students on daily basis," said Ashiraf Chemonges Seiko, the Mukono district Police commander.

Chemonges was addressing over 1000 new students of Uganda Christian University (UCU) in Mukono during their orientation on Tuesday.

He asked the students to be vigilant to every step taken by their fellow students whom he said could also be used as agents of terrorists.

"It is not that every student who reported at the university has a common aim of reading, others are money minded and can easily be given money and directed to participate in terror activities; therefore, it is your mandate to watch your neighbour and know his or her plans," Chemonges advised.

He asked the university to be strict and check everybody who enters its compound, adding that some people can disguise as students or lecturers and later cause problems.

The UCU director of students' affairs Rev. Milton Tweheyo asked the Police to always arrest and put in custody students whom they find moving at night after 12:00am. He said this will save them from falling victims of iron bar hit-men and rapists rampant in the district.
