NRM wins Usuk by-election

At the age of 19, NRM’s Proscovia Alengot Oromait becomes Uganda's youngest MP ever after she was declared winner of the Usuk county by-election.

The final result that was announced just before midnight Wednesday revealed that the youthful political newcomer had beaten eight other candidates to the vacant seat.

Alengot now takes on a position previously held by her late father, Michael Oromait who is said to have died of natural causes in July this year.

His death consequently had left the seat vacant, prompting a by-election. Oromait’s daughter immediately expressed her interest.

She was elected flagbearer for the NRM party after she had won the party primaries a little over two weeks ago.

From the Wednesday by-election, Alengot won with a total of 11,059 votes.

She was followed in second by Charles Ojok Oleny (independent) who polled 5329 votes, FDC’s Charles Okure managed third with 2725 votes and UPC’s Cecilia Anyakoit UPC got 554 votes.

 Martin Anukur Okwakol (independent) polled 284 votes, DP’s Nicholas Oteger with 220, Bob Paul Akilng (independent) 160, Oyola Ignatius Apuda (independent) with 59 and David Ariko tailed with seven votes.

Electoral Commission registrar Joseph Omona read out the final results before a highly eager crowd in the deep of Wednesday evening.

On the voting day FDC stalwarts leader of opposition in Parliament, Nandala Mafabi, party secretary general Alice Alaso, party presidential aspirant Gen Mugisha Muntu and Kassiano Wadri were seen monitoring polling stations.

Their candidate, Charles Okure had earlier been perceived as the closest rival of NRM’s Alengot, but he finished in third place.
