THE Democratic Party (DP) has condemned the manner in which KCCA evicted the railway reserve settlers leaving them stranded.
Addressing journalists at the City house in Kampala, the party Secretary General, also Bukoto South MP Mathias Nsubuga said the eviction was necessary but the method used was inappropriate.
Nsubuga said the action could not have taken place on the eve of Eid when people were in celebratory mood.
“We are not opposed to the eviction and KCCA’s plans of cleaning the city but our concern is that the way people were evicted was not proper. You cannot expect people to celebrate while weeping.
People’s properties were destroyed without giving them enough time to figure out where to take them and when you move around, many are still stuck on streets and city suburbs with nowhere to go,” said Nsubuga.
Nsubuga remarked, “People who have spent over 30 years, others were born and married in the very place cannot be given 28 days to shift from their current residence to somewhere else.”
He added that the failure by government to halt the evictions demeaned the Islamic faith in the country.
“Our people who are Muslims were not respected at all since evictions took place in the middle of their end of Ramadan celebration,” he added.
Nsubuga said the country has got explicit guidelines that it follows when migrating or displacing its people which were not followed this time around.
DP also expressed concern over the heavy police deployment at Ssese Island in Kalangala district, saying the government should come up to explain to people the purpose of the deployment in order to remove fear from them.
“Throughout the last week, I got many calls and reports from different people in Kalangala district complaining about the deployment of security guards at Ssese Island, expressing great fear since they are not aware of the primary objective of the deployment and the time the security officials will vacate the place,” Nsubuga voiced out.
However, Fred Enanga the police spokesman declined to explain why there is heavy deployment saying he is not well informed about the issue.
