Despite their massive lead of 477 points, the national motocross team may fail to travel to Kenya for round two of the FIM-Africa Central Africa motocross championship on Sunday.
The local association is so cash-strapped that there is a high possibility of missing the event at Nairobi’s Jamhuri Park. Team captain Arthur Blick Jnr said that despite assembling a strong side trained by German coach Jurgen Kuper, they do not have funds to take the team to Kenya and National Council of Sports which usually gives a hand has ruled out any support this time.
“I’m worried we may fail to take a team because we don’t have money. We have even failed to get a truck that carries the competitors’ bikes to Kenya,” Blick confirmed the development.
“We need sh15m to send a full team of 30 riders and the bikes must be in Nairobi by Thursday so that they can go for scrutineering on Friday morning,” Blick added.
He appealed to well-wishers and corporate companies to support them because failing to compete in the second leg will mean losing the title to Kenya because they would not be able to fill that point gap in the final round in Kampala in December.
Meanwhile, Maxime Van Pee arrived in Kenya on Sunday to start early training ahead of his MX1 title quest.
“I had to go earlier so that I train with the Kenyans and study their style of riding and also get used to their track which is always too muddy in case it rains,” Maxime stated.
