Wearing a wedding ring or not is an issue widely talked about. Many people have varying views as to why they wear or not wear their rings. This week, Saturday Vision engaged a group of people, aged 25 to 35 years, in a debate, asking their opinion on whether it actually matters to wear a ring after the wedding.

I think a wedding ring and any other ring for that matter is unnecessary. I am not yet married, but when I do, I will have challenges keeping it on. Many people nowadays use rings for show, otherwise how would one explain why ladies prefer wearing both the engagement and wedding rings at the same time. Can one be both engaged and married? I have been in a relationship for about five years and have been faithful without it.
RAK

Do not worry, RAK. You will get accustomed to the ring when the time comes. I had similar worries before I got married, but eventually, I got used to it.

I think rings are a Western tradition. Otherwise just the ring alone cannot make one faithful. BeatriceBeatrice, some people say there are ladies who go after only married men. Is this true?

There is one who believes in dating men for fun. She says her best choice is always men wearing a ring because such never ask for commitment. There is a scenario where a lady wanted to be sure that the man was married. She first researched about him and when she confirmed that he had a family, she started ‘dating’ him.

A wedding ring came as a result of the need to identify dead soldiers during the wars England fought. The ring made the sorting process easier and also was meant to help the soldiers remember that they had a family and so would fight on with more zeal, knowing there is a wife and probably children back home. It is for similar reasons that the crown prince of UK does not wear one, though he wedded recently. It is also not true that this ring was of great importance in the past. It is a fallacy created by the jewellery industry for obvious reasons. A ring, or any other symbol of love is what you want it to be. You and me either give or deny meaning to anything made by human hands.

My husband takes off his ring when he gets home and keeps it in a particular place. One thing that amazes me is he never forgets to put it on when going out. To me, it’s a sign that he values the marriage. I agree with RAK on wearing both the engagement and marriage ring. I do not wear my engagement ring because when I got married, my engagement ceased to be.

I think most women wear their engagement rings after marriage because they might not have had enought time to wear them before marriage. My opinion is a man should give the engagement ring on the day he proposes, not on the day of introduction (kwanjula). I got mine 10 months before the wedding, may be that is why I easily put it away.

Why would you discard an engagement ring that cost your husband a fortune, just because you are married? I choose to wear mine, after all, the fact remains the same. My give-away ring (not engagement) is also beautiful, so I also wear it.
I have male friends who do not wear their rings because they say it keeps off girls from them. However, as a married woman, I know every woman feels secure and loved when their husband wears his wedding ring, regardless of whether he cheats on her or not.

Just over year ago, my husband gave me a ring with an inscription of his name before our relatives and friends. He stated that he would stick to me throughout his life. When I also did the same, he was filled with joy. So, trading such a symbol for comfort or anything else is not worth it. I don’t care where the rest of my wedding attire is, unlike my ring. When I see a man with his ring on, I feel he loves his marriage, and his finger speaks a lot about it.
Before I got married, I was keen on every man’s finger. The way I talked to those who did not have rings was different from how I talked to those who had.

When at home, I remove my ring from my finger so that the gold does not easily wear off. I hate bling, but I wear my ring because it makes my wife happy. You may not believe that one time I got employed because of my ring. The employers said it portrayed me as a mature man. My wife was also once asked to join a law firm because her ring had impressed her potential employers.
Ronald

I agree with you Ronald. Someone who is proud of their vows and can manage family challenges is indeed mature and responsible.
