The Police boss, Lt. Gen. Kale Kayihura has banned processions and public rallies from Kampala and other neighboring areas during the Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU) assembly.

Uganda is hosting the week-long 126th Assembly of the IPU from March 31 to April 6 which is expected to attract over 5000 delegates.

Addressing journalists at Uganda Media Centre in Kampala on Thursday, Kayihura said that to avoid disruption of movement and activities of the assembly, the Police have designated Kololo Independence Grounds for all intended demonstrations.

"We have heard through our intelligence that some groups intend to hold rallies along Entebbe road during the assembly which we cannot accept. We are working together with other security agencies to ensure safety of the public and security of the delegates. All people should respect that," he said.

Kayihura said people should expect some degree of traffic disruption along Entebbe road and the city centre.

He warned the public over unnecessary travels, and asked motorists and other road users to cooperate with traffic officers during the assembly.

Groups intending to use Kololo grounds should follow the elaborated Police guidelines to ensure order during the assembly.

Demonstrators will enter and exit singly at the venue, vehicular and other traffic will enter the venue through the Northern bypass and all other people through the main gate.

Items like glass bottles, stones and sticks which can be used as weapons are prohibited at the venue. Vehicles and other motorists will not be allowed at the venue and all events must end two hours before dark.
