THE head of the European Union (EU), Vincent De Visscher, has asked the Government to build unity in order to achieve peace ahead of then 2011 general elections.

“The European Union has managed to develop because of the solidarity we built to bring up nations that were poor. Today, EU is made of 27 nations,” said Visscher.

The EU head made the remarks after receiving a peace flag from Always Be Tolerant chairman, Moses Musana, at the EU offices in Kampala recently.

Musana had visited the EU to discuss how the peace flag would be used to create harmony amidst the increasing political differences in the country.

Visscher acknowledged the role of the peace flag in creating harmony. He pointed out that the flag can also help to fight domestic violence.

He noted that as Uganda moves into the election time, people should put aside their differences and look at what is good for their country.

Visscher urged people to learn to listen and accept others views as a way of building democracy.

On northern Uganda, the envoy said solidarity should be used as a tool to develop the area. He suggested that resources should be got from other districts to boost investment in the war-affected north.
