Makerere University, like the other four public universities, has three admission avenues. They include the direct entry scheme, which is for A’ level leavers and the diploma holders’ entry scheme. The mature age entry scheme targets mature persons who missed a chance to join the university through any of the first two avenues.
Vincent Ekwang, the university deputy registrar in charge of admissions, says there are no specific academic qualifications needed for admission through this scheme. The minimum qualification for admission is 25 years of age. Students must pass an aptitude test, set by the National Council for Higher Education. Candidates must then sit for another exam which is specific to the particular courses they applied for. You can be admitted to civil engineering if you passed that exam. Since you have a diploma, you can also apply through the diploma holders’ entry scheme. But to qualify for admission under this scheme, you should have scored at least a second class or credit diploma.
