MARACHA district elected its interim council last week.Emmanuel Adripio, who represents Oluffe sub-county, was unopposed as the interim chairman.

The elections, held at Nyadri sub-county headquarters, were overseen by the returning officer, Richard Onoba.

The desk officer in charge of West Nile, Stewart Tamale, and Henry Makabay from the data management department witnessed the event.

Several residents observed the proceedings.

Tamale urged the councillors to guard the new district against corruption and discrimination on tribal grounds.

Adripio vowed to improve service delivery through teamwork and co-operation.

He appointed Francis Draga (Yiivu sub-county) as vice-chairperson and security secretary Ruth Lematia (Oleba) as the production secretary.

Josephine Inzikuru (Kijomoro) was appointed for social services and Gilbert Akuma (Nyadri) for finance.

The elections bring an end to the five-year jinx that had dogged Maracha/Terego district.

Parliament recently granted Maracha county autonomy, while Terego was returned to Arua district after the two counties failed to agree on the location of the district headquarters and on a name for the district since 2005.
