FROM brushing with relegation, to pushing for the championship. That’s how far the UCU Canons have come in a few months.

In November last year, the Canons were in line for demotion from the FUBA men’s basketball first division.

A terrible season had culminated into a serious crisis –– a forfeited match against the KCC Lions that threatened to have the team relegated.

FUBA had ruled that they failed to honour the fixture, condemning them to the drop. But the decision was reversed after it was established the Mukono side had only turned up late for the match because of a miscommunication.

What everyone didn’t know is how well the Canons would recover from the scare this season. Part of the problem was that they were very weak, that is why they had ended up four points away from relegation.

However, they made three signings in pre-season that have dramatically changed their story. They got Jimmy Enabu, Sunday Okot and welcomed back Geoff Omondi.

Among other attributes, Enabu brought pace to the attack, while Okot came with attitude and skill. As for Omondi, he brought everything – great leadership, maturity, competitiveness and some old-school drama.

The result has been a radically transformed team that has gone through the first round with 10 wins out of 11, including victories against champions Kyambogo Warriors and D’Mark Power.
