ELDERS in Pallisa district have formed income-generating groups to fight poverty. Over 60 groups have registered with the district community development office.

Subairi Omoka, 70, of Agule Elders Group, said they engage in small-scale businesses like selling firewood, soya beans and termites in the nearby drinking joints.

“Due to the increasing cost of living today, we can no longer depend fully on our daughters and sons,” he observed.

Keletesia Oluka, 65, a mother of five, said: “Through our group, we got money from the district to open the businesses.”

“I can now eat well, treat myself, buy what I want anytime and dress like an officer,” she said.

Oluka, however, expressed concern that the Government had not come out openly to help them after they were registered last year.

“They told us that we shall also have our MP for men and women, but up to now, nobody has come to tell us what to do,” she lamented.

Ikerementi Odie, the district community development officer in charge of rehabilitation, said the Government would send sh39.7m this year to support the groups. He added that of the groups, 14 had got the money.
