THE Uganda government and Allied Worker’s Union (UGAWU) have proposed a law for a compulsory retirement for all public servants who attain the age of 55 years.

This, it argued, would enable young graduates and experienced professionals to replace them and have opportunities to progress within the public service.

“There should be another provision for mandatory retirement for all public officers who attain the age of 55 years,” read minutes of the meeting obtained by New Vision. Currently, the retirement age stands at 60 years.

The union’s national executive committee came up with the position in a meeting held over the weekend at its headquarters in Nakulabye, a Kampala suburb.

In a May letter to the public service minister, President Yoweri Museveni directed that the retirement age be lowered to 50.

Worker’s MPs and several trade unions, however, rejected the President’s proposal, saying be sustained at 60 years.

UGAWU also wants a provision for public officers who are willing to retire at the age of 50 years. They also want retiring officers to automatically access the pension payroll.
